Hutt City Kindergartens have been growing young learners for over 95 years in Lower Hutt, providing quality and affordable early childhood education. About our kindergarten

The management of Stokes Valley Community Childcare Centre will transition to become part of the Hutt City Kindergartens (HCK) network on 1st July.  We're excited to welcome SVCCC into our whānau, where it will be named Fetu Ao Kindergarten.

Fetu Ao means “Morning Star” and is a symbol of new beginnings and guidance. Our name reflects our commitment to nurturing tamariki through a supportive and future-focused learning environment.

Fetu Ao Kindergarten caters for children from 6 months through to 5 years, offering an all-day, all-year service (8:00am to 4:30pm). We combine the nurturing, child-centred philosophy of kindergarten with the flexibility of longer hours, to provide a stable and enriching environment.

​The Senior Head Teacher position

Hutt City Kindergartens is seeking an exceptional and experienced leader who can work collaboratively to provide a quality learning environment to the community.

The Senior Head Teacher is responsible for providing professional leadership and direction to the team, to ensure the provision of quality education and care of children.  This position reports directly to an Association Senior Teacher and the successful applicant will work closely with them to give the team strong leadership and direction. 

Your non-contact time will be spent managing the kindergarten, ensuring licensing compliance, and mentoring the team.  Liaison with external agencies, key stakeholders, whānau and Association management is a key component of this position.  You'll also be working on the floor, engaging with tamariki and leading the implementation of the teaching strategies and learning programme.

To be successful at Fetu Ao you must:

  • have a high level of knowledge and practice of Te Whāriki and current learning and teaching theories

  • be able to demonstrate your understanding of the Licensing Criteria for Early Childhood Education and Care Services

  • have previous management experience in a similar environment.  You will be able to discuss how you will:

    • lead the development and review of the philosophy and ways of working

    • mentor and inspire staff, so they share your vision for the kindergarten

    • engage with the local community to promote the service and grow the roll

    • develop and manage allocated budgets, purchase resources and plan for the future of the kindergarten

    • liaise with whānau and support agencies.

  • a minimum qualification of Dip. Tch (ECE or Primary)

  • at least five years in a kindergarten or ECE leadership position

  • a current Practicing Certificate from the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand

  • a current First Aid certificate

  • the legal right to work in New Zealand.
