Waterloo Kindergarten - Teacher, fixed-term (full-time)

Monday - Friday, 40 hours per week
All-year kindergarten model (we're open for most of the year)

Who are we?
Hutt City Kindergartens have been growing young learners for over 95 years in Lower Hutt, providing quality and affordable early childhood education. Our teaching teams are passionate about providing rich learning environments where children can explore, develop and have fun. We welcome people who can share in that passion.
We are a not-for-profit dedicated to making quality early childhood education accessible to all. We have 22 kindergartens throughout the Hutt Valley, including Stokes Valley, Central Hutt, Western Hills, Wallaceville and Wainuiomata. About Waterloo Kindergarten
The team at Waterloo Kindergarten has created an environment that provides a range of opportunities for children to engage in, explore and follow their interests. Teachers promote curiosity and discovery and the kindergarten is rich in early literacy experiences.
The kindergarten’s environment encourages exploration of the natural world with its trees, bushy enclosures, gardens and bird life. Children’s knowledge is valued and celebrated, which has created an environment where the children are excited about learning.
As an all-year service, the kindergarten will remain open for one week of each school holiday break, with a two-week closure period over Christmas / New Year and on public holidays.

The position
We are looking for an experienced, passionate and dedicated Teacher to join the team at Waterloo. This is a fixed-term position providing cover for a Teacher on secondment from 21st January - 18th December 2026.
As an all-year service, you must be available to work during the first week of every school holiday period. However, you can apply to take annual leave throughout the year, when you need it.
Working at Waterloo Kindergarten will allow you to:

maximise 12.5 hours of non-contact time, by engaging in regular team planning and assessment meetings.
To be successful in this role, you will need to:
be a committed team player, with an enthusiastic "can do" attitude
embrace the vibrant hum of kindergarten, while encouraging a calm, peaceful learning environment
have a comprehensive understanding of Te Whāriki
be intuitive and understanding of the varying needs of tamariki
have the proven ability to write engaging and informative assessments
have excellent communication skills and a great sense of humour!
Tamariki will benefit from having another teacher who will bring their own unique skills and interests to the kindergarten and you will love working with a small team of experienced kindergarten professionals.

Applicants must hold a:
Minimum of Dip. Tch (ECE or Primary)
Current Practicing Certificate from the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand
Current first aid certificate.
We offer competitive pay rates, 6 weeks’ annual leave and paid professional time.
