Van Driver or Assistant

Who are we?

Hutt City Kindergartens have been growing young learners for over 90 years in Lower Hutt, providing quality and affordable early childhood education. Our teaching teams are passionate about providing rich learning environments where children can explore, develop and have fun. We welcome people who can share in that passion.

We are a not-for-profit dedicated to making quality early childhood education accessible to all. We have 20 kindergartens throughout the Hutt Valley, including Stokes Valley, Central Hutt, Western Hill and Wainuiomata. About the Van Service

Hutt City Kindergartens provides transport for families who do not have
access to transport and whose children would not participate in
Kindergarten education without transport support.

A child’s placement in the van is generally regarded as a temporary
placement and is reviewed regularly as there is a high demand for

Our van is staffed by a ‘Driver’ and a ‘Driver Assistant’ There will be
two adults in the van at all times children are being transported. No
Child will be in the van for longer than one hour.

The position

This service is being offered tamariki attending our Kindergartens in the Hutt Valley area.  The role would be for a minimum of 10 hours per week, but currently has an average of 20 hours per week - term time only 40.8 weeks per year:

  • Approximately 90 minutes before session (8.00am-9.30am ish) 
  • Approximately 90 minutes post session each day (1.30pm-3.00pm ish).  

These hours may fluctuate as it depends on the need in our communities.

Key Tasks

  • Drive the van to pick up and drop off children
  • Ensure the safety of children at all times
  • Collect children from their parents (front door) before session
  • Return children to parents (front door) after session
  • Be responsible for the wellbeing of children in the van
  • Ability to develop positive relationships with tamariki and whānau
  • Prepare appropriate paperwork.

  • Have a valid and clean New Zealand Drivers Licence
  • Hold a First Aid Certificate (Preferred).
