Who are we?

Hutt City Kindergartens have been growing young learners for over 90 years in Lower Hutt, providing quality and affordable early childhood education. Our teaching teams are passionate about providing rich learning environments where children can explore, develop and have fun. We welcome people who can share in that passion.

We are a not-for-profit dedicated to making quality early childhood education accessible to all. We have 20 kindergartens throughout the Hutt Valley, including Stokes Valley, Central Hutt, Western Hill and Wainuiomata. Taita Kindergarten offers a welcoming home-away-from-home environment for tamariki and their whānau. 

Our team aspires to develop a lifelong passion for learning in our tamariki, encouraging questions and creatively discovering new ways and ideas to teach through play. Our teachers create experiences and opportunities to help children develop the social skills and attitude they need for a future of learning.

​The position

We are looking for an Early Childhood educational leader to lead the team, tamariki and whānau at Taita Kindergarten.

The ideal candidate will be an inspirational, creative leader and passionate head teacher, who is able to demonstrate the following:

Professional Leadership

  • Leadership experience in curriculum design and delivery.
  • An ability to incorporate the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and extend own and others’ knowledge of Te Reo Māori and tikanga Māori.
  • Strategic thinker with a strong focus on improving the quality of education for children using self – review processes.
  • The ability to develop learning partnerships with whānau and able to improve learning outcomes for Māori and Pacific children.
  • An ability to improve team effectiveness through active coaching and mentoring strategies that grows teachers’ capability and capacity.
  • Effective communication/listening skills and well developed literacy skills.
  • A critical and reflective practitioner that makes ethical and well placed decisions to develop practices of inclusion.
  • Lead and develop the leadership of quality improvement processes and initiatives.

Operations and Relationship Management

  • Have a working knowledge of relevant compliance related to legislation through monitoring and reporting requirements for an ECE environment
  • Effective coaching and mentoring skills
  • Current professional knowledge and experience to lead curriculum design in line with Te Whāriki and Tātaiako
  • The proven ability to build partnerships with whānau/families that promote positive learning outcomes for all children
  • A critical thinker that generates ethical, well placed decisions that positions the child powerfully within their cultural context

  • Minimum of Dip. Tch (ECE)
  • Full/provisional certification
  • Current First Aid certificate

We offer competitive pay rates, 6 weeks’ annual leave and paid professional time during term breaks.
